TO GET BACK TO LOVE .
Now, to get back to love. One person is attracted to another because the unconscious knows that the person is something, or represents something, the first person needs to have in order to complete himself. In order to gain this valuable element, he needs to establish some kind of relationship. This turns out to be a matter of degree. The more one person seems to be complementary to the other, the greater is the attraction. Sometimes the projection is a surface one and is soon satisfied or dissipated. Sometimes it is one that ripens into a strong need on the part of each to spend their lives together, as friends, or as man and wife, because there is so much with which each can complement the other that it would take a lifetime to fulfill the task.
In the beginning of a powerful attraction each tends to project upon the other far more than is realistically true. Each makes the other a god or a goddess. Since the other holds the promise of fulfillment, the feeling is that they cannot live without the other. This is always a favorite expression of lovers. In a sense it is true because one cannot live a completely fulfilled life without incorporating what the other symbolizes. That is why threats to the security of the relationship create such a terrific anxieties that the person tends to do the one thing that will destroy the love; that is, to clutch at it and attempt to imprison it. The whole process can be successful only when each has the free opportunity to explore the other, to give and take freely without obligation or duty.
